Agents, Read The PPACA

All of us sports enthusiasts have suffered the injustice of watching our team penalized, unjustly, by an umpire’s bad call.  “Kill the ump,” “We were robbed,” or “Buy some glasses” have escaped our lips while we were watching the instant replay on TV while the commentator coolly explains the nuances of the game’s rules.

 Fans, in our culture, are permitted to express their emotions.  As long as they do not injure someone or interfere with the game, they can say pretty much anything they like.  Commentators are different.  They are not allowed the same passion as a fan.  Even if they do not agree with an official’s call they may say, “I don’t agree but it is what it is.”

 As a citizen of the United States and a father of two sons who will have to pay the debts my generation is causing, I am vehemently against Obamacare.  I am a fan of this nation and my profession.  In my opinion, president Obama has spent trillions of dollars for no visible benefit.  I also believe that the federal government has no additional business in the insurance industry.  In my opinion, the states are doing a good job.  Texas does not need the interference of a congresswoman from California.    

 As an insurance agent, however, I cannot afford the same luxuries as a fan.  People are confused about the Patient’s Protection and Affordable Care Act.  When they call me, or any other insurance agent, they are looking for facts, not opinions.  As insurance agents, we have to act like Commentators and keep our cool, at least in front of our clients.

 Every week I do something that many of the more vocal members of congress did not do before casting their votes.  I read a different section of the Patient’s Protection and Affordable Care Act.

 As a citizen, I want to scream, “We were robbed” and “Buy some glasses.”  I want to put on a suit and sunglasses to be led through the halls of congress while carrying a red tipped white cane.  Apparently, I am not the only one in America with a similar desire.  Those actions may not change anything but at least they will feel good.

 As insurance agents, at least when it comes to Obamacare, we are not permitted to express our opinions.  Perhaps that could be phrased better.  The 111th congress and president Obama have proved to me that in spite of what they say, they are not interested in the opinions of American citizens.  They currently have control of power and they are going to use it to advance their personal agendas regardless of what the people say.

 Insurance agents, remember, when you are talking to your clients, they really do not care whether or not you are supportive of the PPACA or against Obamacare.  They want to know how the new legislation is going to affect them and what, if anything, they should do.

 They do not need your biases and excuses.  Strong emotion leads to misinformation.  They need you to keep your cool and offer them advice based on facts.  You need to learn both the good and bad parts of the PPACA.

 You can exercise your rights as a citizen to protest and vote outside of the office but once you are in front of a client, you should know both the good and bad parts of Obamacare so your client can make an informed decision based on facts.

 It is, after all, not your client’s responsibility to read and understand the PPACA.  It was first congress’s job before they voted for it but they did not do the job they were supposed to.  Now that it is insurance law, if you are an insurance professional, you need to know it before you give advice about it.

 Don’t be like congress and ignore your responsibility.  Read the law.
